Stroke Symptoms

Knowing the signs and symptoms of a stroke are important in order to detect and beat it. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately.

• Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body
• Sudden trouble speaking or understanding conversation
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination
• Sudden visual impairment in one or both eyes
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause

• Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States suffers from a stroke.
• Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States.
• About 60 percent of stroke deaths occur in females, and 40 percent in males.
• High blood pressure is the number one cause of stroke.
• Up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable.
